The timeline is another database view you can use to visualize the same information in a different way. It is a Gantt chart<\/strong> commonly used in project management<\/strong>. As an example, you can have a database containing all your engineering projects, with a timeline view showing how long they will take to build and when they will launch. All project pages on the timeline are fully customizable: they can be structured however you like or according to the project’s needs. <\/p>\n

Timeline view features<\/h2>\n\n
  • Show the table<\/strong> with one or more properties alongside your timeline for better clarity, or hide it<\/strong>.<\/li>
  • Group your timeline by a Date, Created time, or Last edited time property, or use different start and end dates<\/strong> for even more flexibility.<\/li>
  • Visualize your tasks by hours, days, weeks, fortnights, months, quarters<\/strong>, and years<\/strong>.<\/li>
  • Create different granular views of your data by adding combined filters with AND and OR logical operators up to three layers deep.<\/li>
  • Add a Board<\/strong>, Table<\/strong>, List<\/strong>, Gallery<\/strong>, or Calendar<\/strong> view to your timeline, or add a timeline to your existing databases.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n

    Timeline view limitations<\/h2>\n\n

    The timeline view is available on all Notion plans, including free and paid plans, though with certain limitations.<\/p>\n\n

    • Personal and Personal Pro plans:<\/strong> 3 Timelines per workspace.<\/li>
    • Team plan:<\/strong> 5 Timelines per workspace.<\/li>
    • Enterprise plan:<\/strong> Unlimited Timelines<\/li><\/ul>\n\n

      In reality, there is a soft limit for the Personal, Personal Pro, and Team plans. You can add more than 3 timelines; Notion will simply show an alert in the left column reminding you to upgrade once you have reached that number. Depending on your plan, you have a limit of 3, 5, or no limit. The timeline counter includes both new tables with the Timeline view and different Timeline views within the same table. <\/p>\n\n

      For example, if you are using the Personal Pro plan and create a table with 3 Timeline views, you would have already reached the limit for this type of view for your plan. When you create one more view or a new table with this view type, the alert message shown in the image above would appear. <\/p>\n\n

      What is a Gantt chart?<\/h2>\n\n

      A Gantt chart, commonly used in project management, is one of the most popular and useful ways to show activities (tasks or events) displayed against time. On the left of the chart is a list of activities, and at the top is a suitable time scale. Each activity is represented by a bar; the position and length of the bar reflect the start date, duration, and end date of the activity. <\/p>\n\n

      • The project start date.<\/li>
      • What the project tasks are<\/li>
      • Who is working on each task<\/li>
      • When tasks start and finish<\/li>
      • How long each task will take<\/li>
      • How tasks are grouped, overlap, and link to each other<\/li>
      • The project end date.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n

        History of the Gantt chart<\/h2>\n\n

        The first Gantt chart was devised in the mid-1890s by Karol Adamiecki, a Polish engineer who ran a steel mill in southern Poland and had become interested in management ideas and techniques.<\/p>\n\n

        About 15 years after Adamiecki, Henry Gantt, an American engineer and project management consultant, devised his own version of the chart, and it was this that became widely known and popular in Western countries. Consequently, it was Henry Gantt<\/em> whose name would become associated with charts of this type. <\/p>\n\n

        Originally, Gantt charts were laboriously prepared by hand; every time a project changed, it was necessary to modify or redraw the chart, which limited its usefulness, as continuous change is a feature of most projects.
